Ready, Set, Duck!

Ready, Set, Duck!

The 2026 Duck Season is almost here!
After the Victorian Government rejected the recommendation from a parliamentary inquiry to end recreational duck hunting last year, it has introduced new rules and measures aimed at making the sport more sustainable.

Here’s what you need to know to get started:

Season Dates & Duration for the 2026 Season

Duck season kicks off on March 18 and runs until June 8, 2026. For the first five days, hunters can be out from 8 AM to 30 minutes after sunset, and after that, hunting is allowed from 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset.

Changes to Bag Limits

In previous years, hunters were limited to 6 ducks per bag, per hunter. This year, you can safely take home up to 9 ducks per bag, per hunter. This decision is part of Adaptive Harvest Management for game ducks in Victoria, a move to make duck hunting more sustainable.

Species Permitted for Hunting

Seven game duck species are allowed in the 2026 season:

  • Pacific Black Duck
  • Mountain Duck
  • Chestnut Teal
  • Grey Teal
  • Pink-eared Duck
  • Wood Duck
  • Hardhead

Blue-winged Shoveler cannot be hunted

Gear to Maximize Your Success

Having the right equipment can make your hunting experience safer, more effective, and enjoyable. Consider integrating the following:

  • Duck Callers: Both manual and electronic callers can attract ducks into your setup. Practice your calls before the season to mimic natural feeding and movement patterns.
  • Camo Clothing: Blend seamlessly into wetlands with waterproof jackets, pants, and hats in neutral tones. Layering ensures comfort during early morning and late evening hunts.
  • Slings: A reliable shotgun sling makes carrying your firearm comfortable while moving between blinds or decoy setups. Adjustable and quick-release slings reduce fatigue.

Duck Decoys: Strategically placed decoys simulate feeding or resting ducks and lure birds closer. We've just got in a variety of Fool Em' Duck Decoys.

More Important Information

  • Only non-toxic shot can be used to hunt ducks and quail in Victoria; lead is not permitted.
  • Regulations require hunters to make their best efforts to retrieve game immediately to salvage breast meat.
  • Only approved shotgun types (≤12 gauge) and approved gundog breeds are allowed while hunting.

With these updates and gear tips, you’ll be ready to make the most of the 2026 duck season - ethically, safely, and sustainably. Don’t forget to check out new game bags and bird carriers to comply with regulations and make transport easier.
